lets_be_cops

Last Saturday night, Lindsay and I went to see Let’s Be Cops. We’d wanted to see it since we saw the trailer at 22 Jump Street, and it did not disappoint. It’s a shame that it came out during such an anti-cop moment in time, as it’s pretty fun. It’s no Jump Street, mind you, but it’ll definitely be worth checking out once it’s added to FX’s weekend lineup between Iron Man showings. If nothing else, the movie shows how hilarious New Girl would be if they’d just fire Zooey Deschanel.

brangelina

Apparently Brangelina finally got married last weekend. Whatever.

2014 MTV Video Music Awards - Show

The MTV Video Music Awards were last Sunday, and sadly there were few newsworthy moments of the night. Nicki Minaj was everywhere, but there was no visual spectacle like last year’s Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus performance. In fact, Miley was pretty responsible this year, using her win as a platform to inform about the prevalence of teen homelessness. The performances of the night were pretty lackluster, too. Last week’s West Week Ever winner, Taylor Swift, performed her new single “Shake It Off”, only this time she had guys in tuxedos instead of twerking chicks in booty shorts. The spectacle was meant to take attention away from the vocals. Someone isolated Taylor’s vocals so that you can hear them without the backing track, and let’s just say it’s pretty bad. I can’t embed it here, so you’ll have to go over to Deadspin to hear it. In her defense, it was a live performance with choreography, but I’m sure her PR team hates that this is floating around.

Dino Charge

It’s been a pretty big week for Power Rangers, as last weekend at Power Morphicon 4, the new cast for Power Rangers Dino Charge was revealed. What’s important about this is that it’s the first season to feature a Black Pink Ranger. Or Kinda Black. I dunno, she’s probably mixed with something, but I’m employing the One Drop Rule. In the past, the Black girl has been relegated to Yellow Ranger status, but not anymore. Yes, We Can! Anyway, I’m not sure about this cast. Samurai and Megaforce were a bunch of pretty kids, but I’m not seeing that caliber here. As my friend, Matt, put it, “It looks like 3 of them won a photo op”. And I am not feeling Green AT ALL. In other Power Rangers news, yesterday was the 21st anniversary of the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. At one time, I made a vow to myself to watch the show as long as it came on. I had no clue that vow would take up 21 years of my life! Finally, a few weeks back, I mentioned how the toy for the Pink Ranger’s Dino Charge zord had been changed from pink to purple – ya, ’cause boys don’t like pink. Well, it was confirmed at Power Morphicon that Bandai heard the fans’ pleas and the toy will actually be pink.

doom

A pic of Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four reboot has leaked, and folks are PISSED. Meanwhile, all I can do is laugh. I hate the Fantastic Four, and actually kinda liked the 2 movies we already got. With every new tidbit that comes out about this movie, it feels like the filmmakers are trolling HARD and it fills me with glee. More! MORE!

dr strange

Speaking of Marvel movies, they say that Joaquin Phoenix is in final talks to play Dr. Strange. Not really sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, I don’t really like Dr. Strange so I almost don’t have a dog in this race. At the same time, I also thought Joaquin had too much….gravitas to do a comic book movie. I guess it’s nice that everyone wants to board the Marvel movie train, but I just don’t know if he fits in that universe. I’m not a Benedict Cumberbatch fanboy, but I did think he’d be better in the role than Phoenix. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

hello_kitty

Hello Kitty ain’t a cat? Well, what do ya know?

I found this on a friend’s Facebook page and I HAD to share it. This commercial is THE BEST. My favorite part is when he pounds his fists like a maniacal warlord at the end.

full house now

Everywhere you looked this week, you couldn’t avoid the big news: Full House may be coming back! I guess they saw how well Girl Meets World was received and decided that it was time to revisit the Tanners. Right now, Uncle Jessie, Kimmy Gibbler and the non-Olsen daughters are onboard. They also say that Saget and Coulier are beginning to show interest. It’d be interesting to see how this all turns out, especially behind the scenes. I mean, Candace Cameron Bure’s a born again Christian, Jodi Sweetin’s a recovering meth addict, and John Stamos clearly made a deal with the Devil because he doesn’t age. And of course they’ll have to say that Michelle is living in France or some junk because there’s no way they’re getting those girls back. The big question, however, is where would it air? The TV landscape has changed a LOT in the 20 years since Full House went off the air, and there frankly isn’t room for a show like that on broadcast television anymore. No one is trying to save the family sitcom, especially when you could fill that timeslot with another singing competition. So, that leaves basic cable as the most logical choice. I say it either ends up on ABC Family or TV Land. Either way, it’s all just speculation at this point, but remember that Girl Meets World went from rumor to fruition in a flash. I wouldn’t be surprised if this actually happened, and I’ll be right there ready to watch it when it does. So, for knocking off our pop culture socks with news of a possible return, Full House had the West Week Ever. (Thanks, Jenn!)

  1. Ha I chuckled at the new Doom as well. People are fuming but honestly what did they expect? For a moment there I thought it was Spawn without a red cape.

Full House reunion? Yes please. I want to see this as a limited engagement, something like a short run season with a definite ending. I wish it were something Netflix would consider but it is out of their wheel house. Like you mentioned ABC Family would be a good spot and I think it would do very well as long as it isn’t run too long.

  2. My pleasure! This was actually a great WWE! I always thought Bob Saget had run out of “sitcom dad” juice with Full House. It’d be awesome if they brought back Papa Tanner, but gave him the personality of actual Bob Saget.

Also… what’s going on? who are all those other people in that photo? I recognize only like 2/3rds of the cast…

  3. Full House wouldn’t have to get both Olsen Twins back. At this point, they’d only need one. That aside, yeah…neither are coming back.

My thing about the FF movie is that everyone is hating on it now but knowing the internet, we’re due for that 180° turn here soon where everyone starts saying, “DUDE! How can you think this will suck until you’ve seen it?!?!” Which is a mindset I don’t believe in…

  4. Our family actually loves Girl meets world. Although I’ve been anxiously awaiting for some more guest appearances. We still watch full house on DVD too. As a parent, I would embrace some more family values shows… And Family Matters…

  5. So they can make convincing Iron Man armors but they have to re-invent the wheel with Doom. With that ” want to be cops” cops movie I just think about the first time they encountered real cops the movie would be 5 mins long, still want to see it for a laugh or two. No comment on Dr.Strange or the MMPW. Never been into either. I did not like Full House but I know the characters and the show (I would plop my younger sister down in front of them while I babysat and read car mags and comics). I know the twins have plenty of bucks but whats wrong with throwing the people who got you that money a bone, its KARMA girls you could control the project do a six episode mini series or something where you get married your dad plans wedding (in his character aint it) Jessie’s Band entertains at wedding etc etc its not rocket science

  6. Whoa, Brad and Angelina were not already married? Who knew. I regret not getting to see Let’s Be Cops yet but those two are up there in my favorites. Def on my to-do list.

The new Green Ranger looks like the doofy “adult” on every Disney XD show. I submit Rudy on Kickin’ It as exhibit A.

I am and always will be proud to share a birthday with the Power Rangers.

And CT makes a hilarious point that no one has really mentioned, why would they need twins to play a singular adult character? What if the two of them were so down on their luck that they actually fought over who GETS to be on the Full House return?

  7. “and John Stamos clearly made a deal with the Devil because he doesn’t age.” God I hope they go with that

  8. CT is right come to think of it…you dont need them they would be adults and the show ended before they became teens or tweens for that matter. The older sister from Modern Family has that waif like look the girls sport now.

  9. Excellent post. That Doom…SMH.

THE COMMERCIAL YOU SHARED!!! It deserves all caps and exclamations marks.

Earlier, you were dead on with relevant points about the Taylor Swift twerking controversy.

Hope all is well with you.

  10. @Cody – I would totally be down with a Full House reunion with a definite ending. It makes me wish ABC still had those Wonderful World of Disney movies, ’cause it’d be perfect for that, like when they did the Growing Pains reunion movies.

@Jenn – yeah, I’m not sure who those old guys are in the pic. I figured they might be the producers or the surviving Beach Boys? They were always on the show!

@Lamar – ya know, I still haven’t seen the Corman movie. I used to try to buy bootlegs off eBay, but I eventually just stopped caring. I’ll get around to it one of these days.

@CT – yeah, the tides will definitely turn on the FF movie pretty soon. I still think it might be kinda good, but we’ll have to see.

@Paul – I hear that it’s either the Christmas episode or the Thanksgiving episode (I forget which one) where everyone comes back. The parents, Eric, Shawn, the works. That’s the one I’m looking forward to!

@Darrell – Let’s Be Cops is definitely good for a laugh or two. Yeah, it’d be nice if the Olsens remembered where their fortune came from, but I don’t see them taking part. I liked Full House because it was part of TGIF and we all loved TGIF, but it hasn’t aged well over the years.

@Howie – yeah, I kinda just assumed Brangelina were married since there had been tons of rumors over the years. By the time they finally get around to tying the knot, it seems anticlimactic.

@Mike – if they don’t go with it, I’ll have to write some fan fiction about it.

@Ponderiss – where have you been?! Have you sworn off Twitter? I miss you! That’s such a great commercial, isn’t it? I can’t stop watching it!
