Remember That Show? Episode 20: Kids Incorporated

Now that the sun has set on the Malibu Sands Beach Club, and Saved By The Summer has come to an end, Adam and I are back in the saddle, turning our attention to another 80s/90s property…that still had ties to Mario Lopez. That’s right – We’re discussing the Disney Channel mainstay Kids Incorporated, which is a show I’d never seen prior to prepping for this episode.

If you’re not familiar, Kids Incorporated was a kids television show just riddled with musical performances. It launched in syndication in 1984, but moved to the Disney Channel after one season, where it remained until 1994. After watching one episode, it was clear to me that the music came first, and everything else – including plot and acting skills – came second. Since I didn’t grow up with cable, I didn’t know much about this show, other than it ran somewhat concurrently with The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. Yet, while MMC introduced us to future superstars, like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and more, Kids Incorporated gave us…Wild Orchid *crickets*. Ya know, the group where Fergie got her start? Whereas MMC sort of seamlessly blended music with comedy, the Kids Incorporated producers were clearly going “Can the kid act? No? Too bad, ’cause we paid way too much to license this Rockwell song!”

I’ve always felt some of our best episodes are when one of us has no prior familiarity with the show we’re covering, and this situation is no different. I also share a pretty interesting high school anecdote about a kid who was supposedly on the show. Or someone was gaslighting me. You be the judge! You can find the episode here, or on all major podcast platforms.
